We assist refugees who have been officially designated as such by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), who have then been brought to the United States by the U.S. State Department, and who have then been resettled in the U.S. through non-profit refugee agencies here. Our assistance consists of auxiliary resettlement support, particularly in Pennsylvania, in such areas as housing, acculturation, and related matters. We have also created and distributed nationally various documentary tools for use by refugees and agencies, such as (1) a new apartment move-in checklist, (2) a list of U.S. holidays, and (3) a picture dictionary that translates common words from Tigrinya (the dominant language in Eritrea) into English, with both actual English spellings and English pronunciations using the Eritrean phonetic alphabet.
