But after achieving sovereignty, the leadership of Eritrea’s war for independence quickly turned on its people and its expressed ideals.  Isaias Afwerki, the guerrilla commander and now Eritrea’s president, proved repressive and authoritarian.  After the celebrated victory against Ethiopia, an Eritrean constitution was adopted but never implemented, elections never were held, and civil liberties never fully allowed.
